Motorola Moto G 4G — no alert to texts in conversation

I am new to Motorola so may be missing the obvious but if I send somebody a text on my G8 power the initial reply is attached to a sound alert but anything further is unalerted and I have to keep looking at the phone to see whether the text has been replied to.
Can I get every text alerted in the normal way?

Open the Messages app on your phone.
Select the three dot menu icon in the top right.
Select Settings and then Notifications.
Select Notification Sound and select a tone from the list.
Select OK when done.

This doesn't work as the notification is correctly set. It rings the first time but as the exchange continues it doesn't ring
