Motorola Defy released in 2021 and brings back a name that made good when launched by the company in 2010 (at the time, it was just in North America) when Android outperformed rivals such as iOS, Symbian, and BlackBerry. Inspired by the original model, this year's edition marks the return of water, dust, and shock-resistance, alongside the novelty of Gorilla Glass Victus for the screen that offers increased resistance against shattering and scratches when dropped.
Unfortunately, the model 2021 has not been confirmed for sale outside of Europe and Latin America despite being announced in June 2021. The reason is that the device is sold by the British company known as Bullitt Group, who in turn is famous for CAT and Land Rover-branded smartphones. Limited availability in select European countries makes this a hard handset to track down. That's right, the Motorola Defy (2021) is also not available in the United States (at least at time of publication).
If Motorola announces this model for sale outside of Europe and Latin America, we will update this page accordingly. In Europe, the Defy has a recommended retail price of €329, or about $380.
While the original handset was sold only in black, Bullitt announced that the Motorola Defy 2021 will also be offered in a shade of green. Regardless of the color, the smartphone has a textured plastic finish, which performed well in our review to provide a sturdy grip.
Thanks to its reinforced construction, the Defy does not require the use of any protective covers. Similarly, the screen with Gorilla Glass Victus does not require the installation of protective films, but it is possible to find some options for additional protection on websites specializing in protective films.
There is a unique feature in the Defy 2021 that allows you to slip on charms or straps, thanks to the dedicated hole that has been included by Bullitt in the handset.
The Defy 2021 (identified by product code XT2083-9) is basically an adapted version of the Moto G9 Play (XT2083) and features the same Snapdragon 662 processor, 4GB RAM, and 64 GB of internal storage (and a micro SD card slot for expansion purposes). The triple camera setup at the rear consists of a 48-megapixel main sensor, accompanied by two sensors of 2 MP apiece for macros and depth.
The battery, meanwhile, sports a capacity of 5,000 mAh, and the device includes a 20W TurboPower adapter. The Defy does not include wireless charging or reverse charging options.
Bullitt promises up to two years of security updates for the handset, which also has support for the Android Enterprise enterprise device management system.
The highlight of the Motorola Defy 2021 is without a doubt its robustness against water, dust, or drops, including not only IP68 certification (which covers seawater resistance that is rarely found on other handsets), as well as drop resistance of up to 1.8 metres, and temperature variations. To top it off, Gorilla Glass Victus increases protection against screen damage and scratches, something that is normally found only on high-end devices.
